Taste of the Tablelands

Heli

This Cairns to Tablelands scenic lunch tour looks as good as it tastes. We lift over the bustling tropical city of Cairns heading toward the rugged Bellenden Ker Range with the lowland rainforest of Goldsborough Valley nestled below. Cascading waterfalls fed by the Mulgrave River pass beneath as we traverse Wooroonooran National Park on-route to the ancient landscape of the Atherton Tablelands.

This spectacular Cairns to Atherton Tableland tour is dotted with volcanic water formations – Crater and Tinaroo Lakes, Lake Barrine and Lake Eacham feature beautifully across this fertile region as we approach our lunch destination, Skybury Coffee plantation where your reserved table awaits. Spend a leisurely hour enjoying the crisp mountain air as you take in beautiful mountain views from the deck.

The menu on offer is based on Skybury’s farm produce – fresh tropical flavours with sweet aromas of freshly roasted coffee drifting on the breeze. Lifting once more – your Cairns scenic flight passes over drier, open Savanah country where the Outback begins. Coastal Rainforest mountains come into view with Kuranda, spectacular Barron Gorge and Cairns cityscape providing the final highlights…

Your Journey

Departing from Queenstown, this stunning 1-hour scenic flight to Aoraki/Mount Cook takes in the dramatic landscapes of vast valleys, stunning lakes and New Zealand’s highest mountains. The only way to truly appreciate the sheer size and ruggedness of the Southern Alps is by air and this flight won’t disappoint.

A Heli Hike on the Tasman Glacier in the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park is an adventure usually reserved only for experienced mountaineers. At 27 kilometres (17 mi) long, 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) wide and 600 metres (2,000 ft) thick, it covers an area of 101 square kilometres (39 sq. mi), starting at a height of 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) above sea level.

You’ll fly by helicopter from Mount Cook airport over the gorgeous Tasman Glacier Lake and ice formations on the lower reaches of the Glacier to a location 3000m above sea level and assessed on the day to be safe. Venture on to the surprisingly undulating ice terrain in the shadow of the highest peaks of the Southern Alps (Aoraki and Mount Tasman); equipped with glacier boots and crampons and spend the next 2 hours in another world in the mountains. On the return flight home, you’ll fly close by the massive 1,000-metre-high (3,200 feet) Hochstetter Icefall on the eastern face of Aoraki/Mt Cook.

Fitness Level: Relaxed
Suited To: Adults only

Welcome to the world’s first heli gin tour. In the 1980’s it was wine, then craft beer and now the gin-dustry is making its mark in Central Otago – let us take you on a journey into the world of gin.

This 6-hour gin experience departs Queenstown at 12:15pm and returns at 6:30pm. You will be picked up from your accommodation by our heli partner and transported to their heli base in Frankton where after a safety briefing you will be whisked away on a 15-minute scenic flight to Mt Sale located in the Cardrona Valley. Here your pilot will open the hatch, present and pour your first gin of the day. This location on the mountain top provides privacy and panoramic views, a truly remarkable experience and a great way to kick off your afternoon. You will then be transported by helicopter to the Cardrona Distillery, landing right inside the grounds out the front of the property. Here you will meet your gin guide and be taken through a full sensory, tactile tour of the facilities including gin tastings and drinks in the private tasting room.

Your next stop is an easy drive down the Crown Range into the historic gold mining town of Arrowtown where we visit a wonderful cellar door experience where you will have a self-guided experience being able to use the knowledge you have just gained to enjoy your gin tasting paddle along with shared grazing boards.

The last stop is a 15-minute journey to Arthurs Point where we visit the “Gin Garden by Broken Heart Gin”. Here you will be guided through a range of local Broken Heart gins in a private room with traditional German pizza to share.

This gin experience has been designed to be a nice mix of education, sightseeing and fun. It is perfect for all types of people and there is some flexibility to try other spirits such as vodka, bourbon, whiskey and local wines throughout if you want to balance or restrict your gin intake.
