Magnetic Island SSI Open Water Course

3 Day SSI Open Water Course with Pleasure Divers on Magnetic Island! Come visit paradise and learn to dive at the same time!

Day 1

Starts in the classroom where you’ll learn about dive theory. Theory can be done online prior to the course by visiting and registering yourself with Pleasure Divers Magnetic Island. If the online theory is completed prior to the course the first day is a meet and greet and we go through any problems you may have had with the theory.

Alternatively you can do the theory at the shop. Your instructor will explain dive physics, physiology, and how you are affected underwater. Your Instructor will also take you through each section step-by-step, so that you have a complete understanding of dive theory.

Day 2

Starts in the pool, getting you familiar with all the scuba equipment and helping you understand the basics of diving with some dive skills and practice. Before long you will be swimming like a fish and ready for the ocean. After lunch your Instructor will take you to one of our Island dive sites, for your first open-water dive. On this dive you will get a chance to get comfortable being in the ocean. After you have completed dive 1 you’ll head back into ocean, for your second training dive where you will repeat many of the skills that you mastered in the pool.

Day 3

You’re back into the ocean for your final 2 training dives. As you have already completed most of your skills on dive 2 you only have a few more skills on each dive. You will have plenty of time to relax and enjoy the sites. All that’s left to do is to complete the theory and you’re CERTIFIED and ready to dive!

SS Yongala Dive Trip from Townsville (Certified Diver)

Situated in the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, the S.S. Yongala Wreck is the only large reef structure in the region, drawing a huge variety of marine life earning infamy as Australia’s best dive site.

The 110m S.S. Yongala sank during a cyclone on March 23rd 1911, with the loss of all 122 people aboard. It was not until 1958 that the wreck was first dived and due to its remote location it has remained mostly untouched.

The Wreck:

The wreck begins 15m below the surface and extends to 29m. Protected under the Historic Shipwreck Act (1976), the artifacts, marine life and variety of corals that cover the wreck are second to none, Red Bull names it the best wreck for sea life.

Often seen are Turtles, Sea Snakes, Giant Trevally, Queensland Gropers, Eagle Rays, Manta Rays, Sharks, thousands of Tropical fish and in the cooler months, even Humpback Whales. Diving the Yongala is a bucket list trip no scuba diver should miss!

The opportunity to site whales on their annual journey to warmer waters on our Great Barrier Reef tour during whale season. The humpback whales enjoy putting on a show for customers with tail slapping, pectoral fin waves and sometimes – full breaching!

This 3 day liveaboard dive and snorkelling adventure is unmatched for experience and value and will show you the very best the Outer Great Barrier Reef has to offer.

There is no doubt that the best way to really experience the Great Barrier Reef is to stay out there for a few days. You get much more time to relax and really enjoy yourself and ultimately more time for diving and snorkelling.

It is also much better value than day trips or other liveaboard options. You’ll get to participate in up to 11 dives, 9 day and 2 night, or as a snorkeller you’ll get to experience a large variety of fantastic outer reef locations.

We have 16 exclusive dive sites on 4 different outer reef locations and we visit a selection of these sites on every trip. These sites have been selected for their variety and quality of both coral and marine life as well as great visibility. We rarely dive the same site more than twice.

Our 3 premium, purpose built, multi million dollar dive vessels provide the ideal way to stay out and experience what the reef has to offer. These vessels are 25 metres (80 feet) in length and feature 14 twin share and 2 double cabins with shared amenities for every 2 cabins (8 shared bathrooms total).
